How to Make a Course Workbook (and Why It Lifts Completion)
How to create a student workbook for an online course: structure, exercise types, templates and checklists, design tips and how to deliver it.
A course workbook turns lessons into action. Structure it to mirror your modules: a welcome and how-to-use page, then for each module a short summary, exercises, templates, checklists and reflection prompts, finishing with a final action plan. Make it printable and fillable, keep the design clean with plenty of writing space, and reference it in every lesson so students actually use it.
Students who do something after each lesson are more likely to see results, and students who see results are more likely to finish.
Workbook structure
- Cover with course name and student name field.
- Welcome and how to use this workbook.
- Your starting point: a self-assessment or baseline.
- Module sections (one per module).
- Final action plan: next 30 days.
- Resources and glossary.
Each module section should include key ideas in a few bullet points, exercises tied to lessons, templates or worksheets, a checklist to complete the module, and a reflection prompt.
