Abandoned Cart Emails: Timing, Copy and Examples That Recover Sales
How to set up a 3-email abandoned cart sequence: when to send each email, what to say, whether to offer a discount, and example copy for online stores.
An abandoned cart sequence is a set of automated emails sent to shoppers who added items to their cart but did not check out. Send three: a friendly reminder within one to four hours, a follow-up the next day that answers common doubts, and a final email after 48 to 72 hours, optionally with a small incentive. Show the products, link straight back to the cart, and stop the sequence as soon as they buy.
Cart abandonment is normal; many shoppers leave before paying. The reasons are usually simple: they got distracted, wanted to compare, or hit a surprise like shipping costs. A well-timed reminder brings a share of them back.
The three-email sequence
| When | Focus | |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Reminder | 1 to 4 hours | You left something behind |
| 2. Reassurance | 24 hours | Answer doubts: shipping, returns, reviews |
| 3. Last chance | 48 to 72 hours | Low stock or a small incentive |
Email 1: The reminder
Short and helpful. Show the product image, name and price, and a button back to the cart.
Example (jewelry brand)
Subject: Still thinking it over?
Hi [First name],
You left the Aria gold hoops in your bag. We've saved them for you.

Email 2: Reassurance
Address the reasons people hesitate. Free shipping thresholds, returns policy, delivery times, reviews of the product in their cart, and how to contact you.
Example (home decor store)
Subject: Free returns on your Linen Throw
Hi [First name],
If you're wondering how it will look in your space, you can return it free within 30 days. Here's what customers say:
"Softer than I expected and the colour is exactly like the photos." Maria, verified buyer

Email 3: Last chance
Create a genuine reason to act: limited stock, a cart that will expire, or a small incentive such as free shipping. Keep it honest.
To discount or not?
Discounts can lift recovery, but they also cut margin and can teach regular shoppers to wait for a code. A balanced approach:
- No discount in email 1.
- No discount in email 2; use reassurance instead.
- Test a small incentive in email 3, such as free shipping, and compare results with a version without it.
- Exclude customers who recently received a discount.
Best practices
- Link directly to the restored cart, not your homepage.
- Show the exact items with images.
- Keep the button above the fold on mobile.
- Exit on purchase so nobody receives a reminder after buying.
- Use a plain, personal tone. It reads like a helpful nudge, not a pushy ad.
- Track recovered revenue in your email platform to see what each email earns.
Fix the reasons carts are abandoned
Emails recover some sales; fixing the checkout recovers more. Show shipping costs early, offer guest checkout, display returns information on product pages, and add trusted payment options. Then let the emails catch the rest.

Frequently asked questions
How many abandoned cart emails should I send?
Three is common: a reminder within a few hours, a follow-up the next day, and a final email around 48 to 72 hours later.
Should abandoned cart emails include a discount?
Not always. Try the first one or two emails without a discount and test a small incentive in the last. Offering discounts every time can train shoppers to abandon carts on purpose.
Why do shoppers abandon carts?
Common reasons include unexpected shipping costs, comparing prices, distractions, account creation requirements and uncertainty about fit or returns.
Can I send abandoned cart emails to anyone who visited my store?
Only to people whose email you have and who agreed to receive emails, in line with the rules where you operate.
