Grant vs Loan: What Is the Difference?
A grant is funding you usually do not repay, given for a specific purpose with conditions; a loan must be repaid with interest. Compare both and when to use each.
A grant is money given for a specific purpose that usually does not have to be repaid, as long as you use it as agreed and meet reporting conditions. A loan must be repaid, usually with interest, whatever happens to the project. Grants are competitive and restricted; loans are more flexible but add debt. Many organizations use both.

When a grant makes sense
- Community and charitable projects that do not generate income.
- Pilots and research that carry risk.
- Innovation where funders want to share early risk.
When a loan makes sense
- A business investment that will generate the cash to repay.
- Time-sensitive needs where grant timelines are too slow.
- Projects that do not fit any funder's priorities.
Other options
Recoverable grants, social investment, crowdfunding, sponsorship and earned income can fill gaps between pure grants and commercial loans.

Frequently asked questions
Do grants ever have to be repaid?
Usually not, but funders can require repayment if money is misused, conditions are broken or the project is not delivered as agreed.
Are grants harder to get than loans?
Often yes, because grants are competitive and limited. Loans depend more on creditworthiness and ability to repay.
Can I combine a grant and a loan?
Yes. Many projects combine grants, loans, earned income and other funding.
