How to Get Course Testimonials That Sell
How to collect specific, believable testimonials from course students: when to ask, the questions to use, formats, permissions and where to use them.
The best course testimonials are specific: who the student is, where they started, what they did in the course, and the result they got. Ask at the moment of success (after a milestone or completion), use guiding questions rather than "can you leave a review?", collect written, video or screenshot formats, and get permission before publishing.
Questions that produce useful testimonials
- Where were you before the course?
- What made you decide to join?
- What was the most useful part?
- What result have you achieved so far?
- Who would you recommend it to?
When to ask
- After a milestone module.
- When a student shares a win in the community.
- In a completion email.
- At the end of a cohort's final live call.
Weak vs strong
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Great course, loved it! | I'd never sold anything online. Two weeks after Module 4, I had 23 pre-orders for my sourdough. Maya, home baker |
Formats
- Short written quotes.
- Short video clips.
- Screenshots of messages (with permission).
- Case studies for your sales page.
Use them well
Place testimonials next to the objections they answer on your sales page, in launch emails and on social media. Always get permission and never edit the meaning.
A simple feedback form
Template
- What made you join the course?
- What was your situation before you started?
- What changed after completing the course (or a module)?
- Which lesson or resource helped most?
- Would you recommend it? To whom?
- May we share your answers with your first name and photo?
Turn answers into a testimonial
With permission, combine answers into a short quote in the student's own words. Do not change the meaning, invent results or exaggerate.
Collect proof early
For a brand-new course, run a pilot or beta group and collect feedback from them. Results from clients you have coached on the same topic are also valid proof, as long as you present them accurately.
Be careful with claims
If testimonials mention income or health results, make clear these are individual experiences and not typical or guaranteed outcomes, and follow advertising rules where you sell.
Frequently asked questions
When should I ask for a course testimonial?
After a student reaches a meaningful result or completes a module or the course, while the experience is fresh.
What makes a good testimonial?
Specifics: who the student is, where they started, what they did and the result they achieved.
Do I need permission to use testimonials?
Yes. Get written permission, including for names, photos and any details you share.
